AFTERLIFE the exhibition

Artwork Description:

AFTERLIFE the exhibition is a complete rework of ONLY SLIME's radical 'computer game opera' AFTERLIFE, transforming the mythos and universe of the stage production into an immersive installation. As an installation, the work offers its audience through various mediums, like sculptures, prints, a computer game, an interactive live motion capture installation, a journey into the afterlife imagined from a post-internet perspective. Symbols and characters from computer games, pop culture, historical figures and philosophically speculative ideas are mangled and re-arranged to form their own mythos - their own cosmological logic of the thin membranes that separate dimensions beyond death with the fragility of life. Inspired by dungeocrawler computer games, Dante, Plato's cave allegory, buddhist texts like the heart sutra and hyperpop music, the installation's divided into 2 main zones: The first room which offers a teenager's fantasy space, where pubertal influences are present and dissolve the boundaries between fantasy and reality. The various screens and overload aesthetics in this room act as portals between our 'real' world and imaginary spaces, where our attention bleeds into other hidden dimensions. The bloody brick wall in the middle acts as a mebrane and portal into the underworld. Surrendering through this portal, we enter the second room, where time dissolves, the room houses an endlessly looping pre-world war II grammophone player, and a 80's CRT TV showing blurry static. The room is dim, with a main Kinect live interactive AFTERLIFE-game as its centerpiece, inviting the audience to surrender fully to the mythos of this AFTERLIFE.
