Alternative Computations — Worlds Otherwise Calculated

Nature computes. Life computes. Mathematics is one language through which we read these computations. As language shapes perception, mathematics shapes what a culture can recognize as pattern, proof, or error. Alternative Computations begins from two exclusions. In nineteenth-century Japan, the Meiji government institutionalized Western mathematics, and wasan — a vernacular culture of calculation once practiced as offering, play, and public festival — was displaced. Along with it disappeared not only a method, but another way of seeing the world through computation. Today, quantum computing pursues optimization through error correction, treating quantum noise as something to eliminate. In both histories, what does not serve the dominant order is named error. The installation does not revive wasan, nor does it demonstrate quantum technology. It builds an original cosmology inspired by vernacular cultures of computation. Quantum noise becomes rain. Twenty-eight sangi rods orbit overhead as the Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions: the sky. A tatami floor forms the microcosm of tea ceremony: the earth. More than four thousand reeds evoke Ashihara-no-Nakatsukuni, the reed-covered middle world: the human realm. Together, sky, earth, and human form a spatial instrument. Embodied and ritual gestures attune this installation, shaping rain, motion, and sound. A 28-minute sonic ecology of quantum rain, natural sounds, and mechanical resonance is continuously reborn, physically unrepeatable. Technology becomes violent when it serves only efficiency, optimization, and control. But gunpowder can become either weapon or fireworks. Alternative Computations turns discarded noise into offering, resonance, and festival: a way to calculate otherwise, and let another world appear.
