People Concerto

People Concerto transforms any space into a musical instrument. A 63-cell fabric grid covers the floor; infrared cameras mounted on the ceiling, using an AI Crowd Dynamic Analytics system co-developed with Quanta Research Institute, track each person's position and movement in real time, translating collective behavior into sound. Vocal materials recorded by Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart are embedded in white cells; instrumental recordings by Ictus Ensemble occupy the black cells. Triggering logic authored by composer CHANG Shiuan governs the sonic outcome: the sequence in which cells are visited, the distance between participants and the dancer, the area occupied within a cell, whether a participant is moving or still, and a series of hidden compositional arrangements all shape what is heard. The result is not random - it is structured by compositional intelligence - but it is non-reproducible. Every session generates a soundscape that exists only in that moment, decided by the collective behavior of that specific audience. Choreographer and dancer LIU I-ling moves among the participants, folding and unfolding the installation, slowly driving the transformation of the space. Live instrumental performance by Ictus Ensemble and sheng musician LI Li-chin interweaves with the AI-generated sound field. Participants do not know they are performers. What the work revealed: even as audiences gradually understood that their movement was generating sound, they actively sought a governing will. They wanted to be arranged. The system was designed to decentralize authorship. What it exposed was the human pull toward a center.
