Celebrating women shaping art
and technology
Today is the International Day of Women in Science and Technology. Rather than treating it as a symbolic marker, we’re using it as a moment to look more closely at the women whose work has already shaped, and continues to define, the field of art and technology.
Nearly 50% of Lumen Prize submissions come from women artists
We work daily with artists navigating complex technical, conceptual, and ethical terrain: artists who write code, build systems, interrogate infrastructures, and bring cultural, political, and emotional intelligence into spaces too often framed as neutral or purely technical. Women have always been part of this work. Too often, they’ve been underacknowledged within it.
As an all-female team working across three continents, Lumen didn’t arrive at its community by chance. The fact that nearly 50% of Lumen Prize submissions come from women artists is something we’re incredibly proud of, not because it suggests parity has been “achieved,” but because it reflects what happens when artists feel a space has been built with intention, curiosity, and care.
This figure represents a broad and nuanced range of practices: AI and machine learning, XR and immersive environments, bio-art and speculative design, sound, performance, film, gaming, data, robotics. It reflects artists who move between disciplines fluently, often holding technical rigor and critical sensitivity in equal measure.
Many of these artists are also educators, collaborators, researchers, and mentors who are shaping the field not only through their work, but through how knowledge is shared, challenged, and sustained.
Honoring women Lumen Prize winners
Today, we’re celebrating the women who have previously won a Lumen Prize Award, artists whose practices exemplify the depth, ambition, and intellectual range of the Lumen community.
Their work spans continents and contexts, institutions and independent practice. Some operate at the cutting edge of computational systems; others foreground embodiment, ecology, materiality, or sensory experience.
This is a moment to acknowledge that work and to recognise that visibility must be accompanied by sustained support and access. The future of art and technology depends not only on what is built, but on who is empowered to build it, question it, and imagine alternatives.
We’re proud to celebrate these artists today, and grateful to be building a community that is actively redefining the field on its own terms.
