Artwork Description:

Birds is a finite participatory digital installation about presence and absence. A network of 100 Birds moves between Homes, Away states, and Sanctuaries. Anyone in the world can enter the work by watching for a Bird and Observing it. Each Observation records a specific encounter — who was present, with which Bird, where, and when — and permanently adds that moment to the public history of the work. Observation is not passive. Each act changes the state of the network: Birds migrate, presence is redistributed, and future viewers and caretakers encounter a different world. Homes may become occupied or empty. Sanctuaries may hold what has disappeared elsewhere. The work is active until one million Observations have been made. Each Observation preserves a moment of presence while moving the system closer to its end. After the final Observation, the Birds leave forever, and the installation remains as an empty public memorial to the presence that once activated it.
